The moment Selene entered the dreamscape, she took flight in her raven form above Rook Castle and started toward the eastern side of the mountains. This castle, this land, it was not real, but this was how her mind formed her dreamscape, and it would make it easier to search for the alliance camp in the dream world.
She flew high above the trees with the moon lighting her way, the wind rushing past her feathered body as she made her way east. The mountain peaks slipped by beneath her, each one growing smaller until she reached the foothills that surrounded the Magyr Mountains. Then she sensed them: thousands of sleepers nestled together.
She banked to the right and continued toward the sleepers. The feeling of darkness grew as she reached the alliance. Instead of tents spread out, the people appeared as translucent silhouettes gathered along the grassy plains, separate dreams playing within each mind.
Selene touched down at the edge of the gathering and transformed into her human body. The closest soldier sat amongst the grass, his knees drawn up to his chest. Another one lay on his side. Others were rambling along or lying on their backs. Each sleeper was a mind waiting for her to touch and enter.
Selene walked by the translucent bodies, careful not to brush against them, following the feeling tugging her along, following the darkness.
There.
She looked up. Just outside the camp, the shadows grew stronger. She stretched out her senses, searching for any hints of the Dark Lady. Nothing. That didn’t mean she wasn’t here, though. Or her mother.
Selene transformed again and swooped toward the men lying on the ground where the shadows were strongest. Unlike the other dreamers, they lay on their backs, their wide pitch-black eyes gazing up at the night sky but not really seeing it. It was as if the darkness had seeped into their souls.
Damien was right. It looked exactly like a death sleep.
“Who did this to you?” Selene whispered, vacillating between anger and apprehension. Could she enter their minds and wake them up? What would she find inside?
She knelt down by the closest body, the man’s skin pale beneath the moonlight, and reached out her hand. She hesitated, then placed her hand over his heart.
Darkness enveloped her senses. Her own heart thudded in her chest, but she held her fear in check. This was her sphere of power. And she had learned so much over the last few months about the Light, about life, and about her gift.
She could do this. She would bring light into this darkness. She spread out her fingers and concentrated on her palm.
I follow the Light, and his light dwells inside of me.
A small orb appeared, like a ball of white flames. She smiled. Just like Damien’s soul.
The light spread across the area, devouring the shadows.
She held her hand higher. Awaken, sleeper.
His consciousness began to stir.
The shadows cannot hold you.
Memories began to flash across the horizon of the dreamscape as his mind took hold again.
Come into the light.
